The Democratic Party is a new party. The People of Freedom is a new party. New because - I think these early hints of the election campaign - to "go beyond the concept of right and left. Back to mind the book of Bobbio in 1994, Right and Left. Broadly stated that the concepts of left and right are mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive. And that the Left seeks to transform society while the right to retain the existing one.
Today, however, recognize the concepts of right and left in the current Italian political parties seems difficult. If Berlusconi has never agreed to be caged in the scheme of the conservative right oggi abbiamo anche un Veltroni che non ritiene più sufficiente richiamarsi alla sinistra, nelle varie declinzioni di "centrosinistra", "sinistra riformista", "socialismo" o "socialdemocrazia". Quell'ancora nella cultura della sinistra moderata che ancora era la guida e il credo di Prodi è affondata. Certo l'Unione appariva più come il partito dei consumatori (vedi le libealizzazioni di Bersani) che come una coalizione di centrosinistra ma non aveva rinunciato - paura? - a richiamarsi ai valori della sinistra. Nel partito democratico il tabù è caduto. Non si capisce - nè nel pd nè nel pdl - in nome di che cosa si sia rinunciato a categorie che hanno guidato due secoli di vita politica? Quale sia il sostituto ai concetti di destra e sinistra. E soprattutto se ne possiamo fare a meno.
